* Previously known as benign ethnic neutropenia
* Polymorphisms in ACKR1 gene, which encodes Duffy antigen receptor for chemokines (DARC)
* The mutations lead to neutrophils leaving circulation for tissue, resulting in lower peripheral blood neutrophil counts
* The gene mutation is present in about 60 to 70% of people with African ancestry, and may have evolved to impair entry of [[Plasmodium vivax]] into RBCs
* About 10% of people with DANC will have an ANC less than 1.5
