== Management ==

* Anticoagulation
* If CVAD still needed: continue anticoagulation while it is in situ
* If CVAD no longer needed:
** If it can be left in situ, leave it for up to 3-5 days, up to 7 days, while on anticoagulation to reduce risk of embolism
** Continue anticoagulation for 3 months
* Choice of anticoagulation is primarily [[LMWH]]

== Prevention ==

* Use small calibre catheter possible
* Ensure proper catheter tip location
* Remove CVADs when no longer needed
* No benefit to prophylactic anticoagulation
