  • A species of facultatively anaerobic Gram-negative bacillus that includes six subspecies within the family Enterobacteriaceae and order Enterobacterales
  • Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica is the main subspecies of medical importance, and includes more than 2500 serovars within it
    • Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis is the most common cause of salmonellosis in humans
    • Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovars Typhi and Paratyphi cause enteric fever (typhoid or paratyphoid fever)
