• Vector for Bartonella quintana, Borrelia recurrentis
• Transmitted person-to-person and via clothing
• Lice live in the clothes and bedsheets rather than on the human host
• Long-standing infestation can cause hyperpigmentation
• Diagnosis made based on examination of clothing or bedding
