Syndrome Microbiology Clinical Manifestations Treatment
suppurative parotitis Staphylococcus aureus and other oral flora including anaerobes usually unilateral with acute presentation of fever, pain, ± purulent discharge supportive care with antistaphylococcal antibiotics + anaerobic coverage
non-suppurative parotitis mumps virus, HHV-6, non-infectious causes (sarcoidosis) usually bilateral, with prodrome and less acuity supportive care

Management

  • Supportive care includes analgesia, warm compresses, massage, and sialagogues
  • May need CT or ultrasound to exclude underlying drainable abscess
