Oral candidiasis

• Candidal infection of the oropharynx

Epidemiology

• Uncommon in immunocompetent patients
• Risk factors:
  • Antibiotic use
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Dentures
  • Inhaled steroids

Treatment

• Nystatin 400,000-600,000 units swish and swallow four times daily
• Fluconazole 100 mg po daily for 7 to 14 days (can use a 200 mg load initially)
• Other azoles likely effective (for example, itraconazole, posaconazole, voriconazole)
