Background

  • Genus of Gram-negative bacilli
  • Indole-negative, catalase-positive
  • Includes Ochrobactrum anthropi (most common cause of infection in humans) as well as numerous other species
  • Somewhat related to Brucella

Management

  • Often harbour a chromosomal class C ESBL, giving resistance to penicillins and cephalosporins
  • Empirically should treat with carbapenems, fluoroquinolones, co-trimoxazole, or aminoglycosides
