Mycobacterium abscessus
Management
- Pulmonary infections are treated with combination therapy to improve symptoms:
- Amkikacin 7-10 mg/kg IV once, plus
- Imipenem 1 g IV q12h or cefoxitin 8-12 g/day in 2-3 divided doses for 2 weeks, plus
- Clarithromycin 500 mg PO bid for 6 months
- Disseminated or extensive cutaneous disease is treated with triple therapy as above
- Localized cutaneous disease can be treated with clarithromycin 500 mg PO bid for 6 months
