Multicentric Castleman disease

Background

  • Rare lymphoproliferative disorder
  • Mostly associated with HHV-8, but not necessarily specific to HIV
    • However, some cases are idiopathic

Clinical Manifestations

  • Fevers and chills
  • Generalized lymphadenopathy (universal)
  • Hepatomegaly and/or splenomegaly
  • Edema, pleural effusions, anasarca
  • May have thrombocytopenia, anemia, kidney disease, polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia, hypoalbuminemia
  • Can progress to large B cell lymphoma

Diagnosis

  • Made on lymph node biopsy, with exclusion of other potential causes
