Gram-positive coccus that is oxidase positive
May see tetrads on Gram stain
Normal flora of the mouth and skin
Most often a contaminant, but can cause line infections, device infections, and endocarditis; rare cause of VP shunt-associated meningitis
Treatment is typically with
penicillin
or other beta-lactams, or with
vancomycin
