Left renal vein entrapment

  • Also known as nutcracker phenomenon or syndrome
  • The left renal vein gets intrinsically compressed
  • May be asymptomatic
  • Symptoms main include hematuria (most common), pain (abdominal or flank pain that occasionally radiates to thigh and buttock), gonadal vein syndrome, varicocele, orthostatic proteinuria
  • Symptoms may be worsened by physical activity
