  • Gram-negative bacillus within the family Enterobacteriaceae
  • Motile, indole-positive
  • Previously identified as Escherichia adecarboxylata
  • Environmental organism, in water, food, and other environmental sources, and possibly a member of the intestinal flora
  • May be an opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised patients, but can also infect immunocompetent patients (typically in polymicrobial infections)
  • In humans, can cause bacteremia, wound infections (particularly after water exposure), pneumonia
  • Fairly susceptible gram-negative, like Escherichia coli
