Crystalloids

Colloids

  • Starches: BAD, increase mortality
  • Gelatin and dextran: not available in Canada, and poor data
  • Albumin:
    • No difference when compared head-to-head as initial resuscitation fluid compared to crystalloid
    • Very expensive, and is a blood product
    • Products also contain sodium 110-140 mmol/L
