Background
- May be acute or chronic
Microbiology
- Most common cause of acute infectious thyroiditis is gram-positive cocci (Staphylococcus and Streptotoccus), but can involve others
Clinical Manifestations
- Acute: sudden onset neck pain and tenderness, usually unilater, with fevers and chills
- May or may not have thyrotoxicosis
- Chronic: more likely bilateral, with less pain and tenderness
- May have hypothyroidism
