Impetigo

- Superficial skin and soft tissue infection of childhood most often caused by Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus
- Also known as pyoderma or impetigo contagiosa
- Peak age 2 to 5 years, but can occur in adults
- An initial papule turns into a vesicle surrounded by erythema, typically on exposed skin
- The lesions become pustules, which rupture and form crusted lesions
- If deeply ulcerated, it's called ecthyma
