Germ tube test
From IDWiki
- Microbiology test used to rapidly differentiate Candida albicans from other Candida
- Procedure: the isolate is incubated for 90 minutes at 37ºC in serum, then examined via microscopy
- Interpretation
- Positive if there are small projections three to four times the length of the yeast cell (germ tubes)
- If positive, it suggests either Candida albicans or Candida dubliniensis
- Of the two, only Candida albicans produces germ tubes at 42ºC
