Capnocytophaga

• Genus of Gram-negative fusiform bacilli
  • One rounded end and one tapered end
  • Occasionally filamentous, occasionally curved
• Fastidious and capnophilic
• Members of the normal oral flora of humans and other vertebrates including dogs and cats
• Species include:
  • Capnocytophaga gingivalis, Capnocytophaga ochracea, and Capnocytophaga sputigena, which are associated with periodontal disease
  • Capnocytophaga canimorsus and Capnocytophaga cynodegmi, which cause a spectrum of illnesses in humans
