Duffy-null associated neutrophil count

From IDWiki
(Redirected from Benign ethnic neutropenia)

Background

  • Previously known as benign ethnic neutropenia
  • Polymorphisms in ACKR1 gene, which encodes Duffy antigen receptor for chemokines (DARC)
  • The mutations lead to neutrophils leaving circulation for tissue, resulting in lower peripheral blood neutrophil counts
  • The gene mutation is present in about 60 to 70% of people with African ancestry, and may have evolved to impair entry of Plasmodium vivax into RBCs
  • About 10% of people with DANC will have an ANC less than 1.5
