Background
- Fungus within the order Entomophthorales; previously classified as a member of the Zygomycetes
- Mostly acquired in the USA (40% of cases, 90% of which are from Arizona) and Saudi Arabia (25%)
- More common in men than women
- Risk factors include diabetes mellitus and immunocompromise
Clinical Manifestations
Cutaneous Disease
- A single enlarging, painless and firm swelling in soft tissues on extremities
- May develop a burning sensation as it progresses
- May have a diffuse bluish discoloration
Gastrointestinal Disease
- Mostly in the colon, and the ascending colon in particular
- May have eosinophilia and Splendore-Hoeppli phenomenon
Management
- Resistant to amphotericin B
