Background

  • Fungus within the order Entomophthorales; previously classified as a member of the Zygomycetes
  • Mostly acquired in the USA (40% of cases, 90% of which are from Arizona) and Saudi Arabia (25%)
  • More common in men than women
  • Risk factors include diabetes mellitus and immunocompromise

Clinical Manifestations

Cutaneous Disease

  • A single enlarging, painless and firm swelling in soft tissues on extremities
  • May develop a burning sensation as it progresses
  • May have a diffuse bluish discoloration
